A Strategic Framework for AI Ideation

Before diving into technology, before selecting tools or algorithms, you need clarity. What problem are you actually trying to solve? What knowledge and data do you have access to? What ethical considerations must you address? And most importantly, how will you know if your AI initiative succeeds?

The AI Ideation Canvas is a structured thinking tool designed to help teams navigate these foundational questions. It moves you beyond the hype and forces you to articulate the wisdom you're pursuing, the actors and factors involved, the knowledge you'll leverage, and the viability of your approach—including its ethical implications.

This is not a technical blueprint. It's a strategic conversation starter that ensures your AI project is grounded in clear purpose, realistic assessment, and responsible practice.

Why Use the AI Canvas?

Many AI projects fail not because of technical limitations, but because of unclear objectives, misaligned expectations, or overlooked ethical concerns. The AI Canvas addresses these risks by providing a shared framework for:

Purpose Benefit
Clarifying the question Ensures everyone understands what problem you're solving and why it matters
Mapping actors and factors Identifies who is affected and what variables influence the outcome
Assessing knowledge and data Forces honest evaluation of what you know and what you need to learn
Defining measurable results Establishes clear criteria for success before you start building
Evaluating viability and ethics Surfaces potential risks, biases, and ethical dilemmas early in the process

How to Use the Canvas

The AI Ideation Canvas is designed for collaborative workshops where cross-functional teams can think through an AI opportunity together. It works best when you:

  1. Start with the wisdom: What insight or capability are you trying to gain? Frame this as a clear, answerable question.
  2. Identify actors and factors: Who will be affected by this AI system? What variables influence the outcome?
  3. Map your knowledge: What data, expertise, and domain knowledge do you already have? What gaps exist?
  4. Project results: How will you measure success? What does "good enough" look like?
  5. Assess viability and ethics: Is this project technically feasible? Economically viable? Ethically sound?

The canvas is intentionally open-ended. There are no "right answers," only better questions. Use it to iterate, improvise, and experiment. The goal is not to fill in boxes, but to think systemically about the opportunity in front of you.
